HISTORY OF LAKE TAHOE SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP
The Fellowship was established in 1987 by Dr Randy Watson, Dr Keith Swanson and Dr Eddie Tapper. Since then, we have had approximately 100 fellows graduate. Prior to 2009, we were a six month unaccredited fellowship. We received our accreditation by the ACGME in 2009 and Barton Hospital, our sponsoring institution received their accreditation shortly after that. Currently we have 8 Alumni that reside in Lake Tahoe, Carson Valley and Reno.
MISSION STATEMENT
Lake Tahoe Sports Medicine Fellowship will strive for excellence in Fellowship training and education for future sports medicine physicians. In addition to concentrating on the ‘Six Core Competencies’, the Fellowship will encompass:
- Education - We will provide the best possible educational experience for both Fellows and Faculty as we empower them to effectively apply their increasing fund of orthopedic knowledge. We will instill the commitment to a lifetime of learning.
- Research - We will stimulate and foster scholarly research in both basic and applied medical science as we continue to create and evaluate new knowledge, particularly as it relates to the cause, prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.
- Patient Care - We will provide compassionate, contemporary medical care in a professional, effective and cost conscious manner as we encourage a multi-disciplinary team approach to address the needs of the patient as a whole person.
- Community Service - We will engage our Fellows and Faculty in providing both medical care and health education to members of our community who might otherwise remain unattended.
- Personal Development - We will seek to develop in our Fellows, Faculty and staff those qualities that will be critical to leadership as we meet the challenges of health care in the 21st century - integrity, professionalism, scholarship, collegiality, creativity and compassion.

- Spring/ Summer - recreational and regional sporting events occur all season; some examples of Medical Event Coverage would be the Lake Tahoe Marathon, Hard Rock Half Marathon, MedWAR Challenge and Death Ride.
EDUCATION AND GOALS
The Fellowship is focused on the orthopedic surgery sub-specialty fields of sports medicine and sports trauma. The clinical component of the Fellowship includes approximately 10-15 surgical cases per week and two days of clinical examination, diagnosis and treatment in the office setting. Surgical cases are focused on knee arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder and knee ligament reconstruction, and operative and non-operative treatment of extremity trauma
Treatment of the aging athlete, including joint reconstruction and arthroplasty is an important component of the Fellowship.
There are six primary teaching attendings that assist and guide the Fellow.
The fellows are evaluated using a Formative Evaluation model. The Fellow learning will be monitored and will be provided ongoing feedback to improve their learning of patient care or other educational opportunities.
